Experiences and Skills That Add Value to My Coaching

When the state of Massachusetts hired me to teach a 12-week course on life skills for women in transition, I fine-tuned my coaching skills even more. During four years of teaching hundreds of women—including a group of women transitioning from prison life to society—I became intrigued by behavior styles. This prompted me to become certified as a behavioral analyst using the DISC system. Today, I use DISC with my clients and teach other coaches this incredibly valuable tool, too.

Milestone #1

In my earlier careers as a sales director and image consultant, I had no idea I was being groomed for my future role as a life coach. In 1980 it wasn’t called “coaching,” but the skills were similar. I encouraged, supported, listened, advised, brainstormed, and inspired others to overcome obstacles and stretch toward their full potential.

From focusing on outward physical appearances as a 30-something consultant, my emphasis as a 60-something coach has expanded to include health and wellness—staying healthy, active, agile, and strong well into later life.

Milestone #2

In these early careers, I frequently found myself presenting from behind a lectern. Before long, I began teaching workshops on topics from conflict management to behavioral styles to presentation skills. Little did I know it would be on-the-job training for my coaching future.

Milestone #3

My knowledge of business reflects my experiences as a partner of Dietschler Properties and Bay West Appraisers. Through these companies, I’ve learned about investing wisely, developing business plans, and having quarterly goal reviews. I’ve coached people through their start-up fears and myriad challenges in running their businesses.

Another business formed with a partner other than my husband is F.I.T. for the King . It’s an inspirational way to enjoy fitness of mind, body, and spirit through Christian-oriented exercise.
